AFTER 29 years at Long Ealon Grammar School Senior mistress Miss Evelyn A. Brooks will retire at the end of this Term.
Miss Brooks. of 15 Gwenbrook Road. Chilwell. intends to devote her retirement to her main hobbies of travel and voluntary work. Already scheduled is a trip to see friends in Kenya in January and Miss Brooks who is past President of Long Eaton Soroptimists also wants to join the Women's Royal Voluntary Service
Miss Brooks is obviously looking forward to her retirement, but she confessed: " I shall be leaving the school with very mixed feelings. I have been extremely happy here and I shall miss the companionship of the staff and of course the children.”
Originally from Yorkshire, Miss Brooks was educated at Mexborough Grammar School and Bedford College. London University.
She began teaching in Doncaster, but returned to Mexborough to teach in her old school. where she had been a senior prefect. “In many ways, | felt like a senior prefect once more.” she recalled with a smile.
Miss Brooks came to Long Eaton in 1945 and became head of the history department before taking over as senior mistress in 1971 on the retirement of Miss P. Henley.
