The School Open Days 16th and 17th July 2010
Thank you to all those that have sent off for tickets for The Long Eaton School
Centenary Celebrations.
Tickets have been posted please contact Kath Hall if they haven't arrived.
Requests for tours of the old school buildings have been very popular and are
now fully booked on the Friday. However, if you have not previously applied
for tickets and would now like to come, then some places are available on the
Saturday Afternoon. It is free and all you need to do is phone or email Kath
at the school to book your place. However, if you require lunch, please send
your cheque as soon as possible. Anticipating demand we have over ordered Centenary
mugs and the special Centenary edition of the Gossamer and there should be plenty
left for purchase on the day.
The renovation of the old school is most interesting and in my opinion has been
done very well and still retains the atmosphere of an old school. Rooms have
been refurbished retaining many of the old features such as black boards and
built in cupboards. Interestingly, former pupils Roy Wheatley (1965 - 6th) and
Geoff Carter (1969 - 6th) have moved their businesses into what now is The Mohan
Centre. Roy moved his printing firm - Mathewson's into the old woodwork room
(10) on the ground floor and Geoff moved his Architects practice, Cullen Carter
& Hill into the Art Room (11) on the upper floor above the girl's entrance.
Both are very pleased with their accommodation and Geoff even shows off a picture
of two fighter aircraft he painted in that very same room over 40 years ago!
Please note that these celebrations, including the tours of the old school buildings
have not been organised as a reunion, although you may meet up with people you
know and want to chat. The sixth form common room at the new school has been
set aside as an area to meet and view the photos and memorabilia. Tea, coffee
and biscuits will be available.

The itinerary for each day will include a tour of the new school, an exhibition
of photographs past and present, a presentation by teachers showing the

The Long Eaton School unveils its iconic ‘Vision’
Since 2006, when The Long Eaton School moved from its old buildings on Tamworth Road and Ash Grove to its new premises at Thoresby Road, scholars from the old Long Eaton Grammar School have wanted to sponsor a sculpture at the school. The sculpture should somehow link the past with a vision for the future.
Mr John Eley, Head of Art at the School, suggested creating a simple iconic image of an eye. This could take the form of a mosaic (based on an original he had seen in Rome). An eye would symbolise the “Vision” of the new school. In the words of famous typographer David Jury –
“What I see I remember, What I do I understand”.
The Grammar School scholars were delighted with the idea and the School commissioned Zantium Studios to design and install the eye mosaic outside the front entrance of the school. This was laid out on the School Environmental Fun Day on 1st May 2008. Guests from visiting schools, members of the local community as well as students and staff from the school all placed a single pebble into the mosaic and the completed EYE was finished by the end of the day.
The foundations for the piece were laid by Mr Russell Godber, construction teacher, and students from the school’s construction team. The paving was donated by Marshalls plc of Sawley and laid by Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire.
The EYE will be officially unveiled by Mrs Paula Hammond (Old scholar’s reunion coordinator) on Thursday 10 July 2008 at 1.30pm. Old scholars of the old Long Eaton Grammar school are invited to attend.
