My best friends at school were Marilyn Soar and Stephanie Walker.I went to teacher training college in London after leaving school and much later on retrained and became a university lecturer in Preston and then Glasgow. Retrained yet again and became a journalist, working in Scotland and America practising and teaching journalism. Married Dave Musson, divorced, and then married my current husband, Alan Mackenzie, a mad Scottish journalist. I now have a bed and breakfast inn in St Annes, near Blackpool, and am chairman of the town council.
Barrie Waby   1953 -L6 A   Congleton, Cheshire After I left LEGS, I joined the RAF as a radar fitter until my demob in 1956. I then spent the next 40 years in the computing industry in varying capacities. I took early retirement in 1994 and spent my leisure time in splendid indolence. I married Terry Beddow (from Sawley) in 1958, we had 3 children a boy and twin girls, all of whom have fled the roost. We moved to Congleton some 40 years ago as part of a job move and have stayed there ever since. I was invlved in scouting as a venture scout leader for some years.

Royal Tunbridge Wells School memories: In 1962 (or was it 3?) Canteen sales of biscuits at break-time were suspended - we were too noisy/messy? I organised an alternative biscuit sale in the geography hut buying in biscuits from the only supermarket in Long Eaton - Tescos. In 1964 I organised a Jumble Sale in Sawley to raise money for the Buy a Brick Fund for the proposed sports pavilion. Mr Gray said he was impressed and would mention it in assembly. He never did. I have yet to forgive him. Early entrepreneurial promise did not blossom in adulthood: I eventually became a teacher.
Currently working in Kent as an Education Advisor on Refugee & Traveller Achievement. Still trying to save the world.
Carole Bastable Stark 1964 -5th A   New Zealand I spent a lot of my school years away sick and have some mixed and disjointed memories,as a result, of my time there. One of the people I feel very grateful to and who made my results of O levels positive at first sitting, despite being in a 'home' for most of my fifth form year is Mr. Barlow. He taught English and Divinity. He communicated with me and tutored me by post in his subjects during my absence and this resulted in passes in all three of his subjects. I went on to 5R in my last year and resat then passing other subjects. It would be a great delight to me if I was able to thank him. Any possibility that some one there has a contact for past staff? I have lived in New Zealand with My Husband and two daughters since 1974.

At school I was a keen artist, one of Charlie Fosters A level students, and left behind several bits of work including a giant figure sculpture in the courtyard. Played rugby for school, taking part in the first ever, victorious, match against Trent College; though I was picked more often for my weight than skill. Working with Martin Buczkiewicz I was co-founder of the ‘alternative’ LEGS Hiking Club. After university I started teaching at Cheltenham College and have always taught in independent schools. I am currently Head of Arnold Junior School and Deputy Principal of the whole School (2-18). Married twice I have five children, though only one is still at home, all the others are leading very independent lives
Colin Wood   1980 -5th C   Long Eaton I remember the school with great fondness and now with great sadness knowing it's closing and all the other buildings like the science block, sports hall, and what we called the new block is to be bulldozed. I am hoping to get some photos of these buildings before they are gone and some of Roper as well .Since leaving school I had lots of different job but now working at N.C.S.L the National College for School Leadership. My hobbes are vintage tractors. I have two of them and I show them at steam fairs including the Long Eaton Carnival, of which I am on the committee. Hi to every one who was in 5B5 & 5B6.

Am now teaching at Grange Primary School in Long Eaton via a route through Teacher training College, private education, and supply teaching following a 2 year break for having/bringing up twin boys (now 18). Am (and always have been) a "folkie" - play in a band called Belzebub which has had varying rises and falls - seem to be on the up again at the moment - the folk clubs are great, but we do more ceilidhs than clubs. Used to run a Folk Club at the Tiger when I was in the 6th form with a singing partner called Geoff. Enjoyed school, I think - remember reading a lot in assembly, and I used to play the piano for the hymns.

Soar for ever! Just been to the UK (autumn 2005)where I had a wonderful time meeting up with former school friends for the first time in over 50 years, thanks to Margaret Tysoe(nee Slack. Have played hockey for over 55 years, mainly due to the early influence of Miss Ballantine, Margaret Mellor and Beryl Cholerton. Thanks to all. I last played a couple of matches in late July 2005. Have been in Oz since 1963 and, before you start, we support England in the cricket and rugby!

Monica Newman Hoyle 1968 -5th A Mob: (00357) 99482757 Southern Cyprus When I left LEGS I worked in Textile Research Laboratories, continuing to study Chemistry at Derby Technical College. After courting Chris for 4 years (yes ! I met him while I was still at LEGS) we were married in January, 1971. Our son was born in December,1971 and I stayed home for nearly a decade. I took a part-time clerical position which soon escalated ----- until I became a fully qualified Funeral Director (for nearly 24 years) and an Internal Verifier for BTEC qualification candidates. We now do as little as possible, when we want to - stress free !!
For the past two and a half years I have been occupied in my garden again - but this time some of the plants have changed - to lemons, oranges, apricots etc.. I now look at the sea from my home every morning, instead of after a 3 hour+ journey by car. I now take an interest in my husband's hobby of bird-watching (the feathered variety, though) - flamingoes, pelicans, hoopoe, black francolin, bee eaters... We have been to the World Rally Championship in Cyprus for the past two years (Martin, Loeb, Gronholm etc...). We enjoy the vineyards, mountains, beaches and sailing along the coast with our friends.
I still have an interest in science, art and all music (except Jazz and Rap) and enjoy the concerts given by the British Forces. Our son has stayed in England where he runs his own business. He has now provided us with a lovely daughter-in-law from Belarus - they come to us for stress-busting holidays !

I've been married to David for the past 33 (!) years. I would never have met him if I hadn't gone on the 'O' Level Leavers Course from LEGS to Lea Green in April 1968. He was there too - from Ilkeston Grammar School. I was 15 at the time - my mother said it would never last!

Peter Gadsby   1960 -6th A - Connecticut, USA I found the legsreunited Web site in moment of google searching... and
launched myself on a trip down memory lane. I came to Long Eaton in 1957 to enter the VIth form and study Chemistry
(Mr. Cocking), Physics (Mr. Askew... a large class I recall) and Maths
(Ms Pinfold and Mr. Andrew(s)), leaving in 1960 to go on to USheffield,
then UBritishColumbia, back to England for a stint in Operational Research. Cupid drew me to the US for what was to be one year in 1969.... I have been here ever since! a brief stay in Management Engineering then teaching until 1988. And since then Real Estate anagement. I have lived in Connecticut since my arrival and have lived in Cheshire, CT since 1986. My last visit to Long Eaton was in 1987 to close the sale of our
house on the Wilsthorpe Estate and help my mother relocate to British Columbia to be closer to my brother... Connecticut being too cold in winter and too hot in summer! Prior to that I would come and go on various trips to the UK, sometimes having a pint or too of Marston's with
Rod Key who arrived from South Shields shortly after I arrived from Wimbledon. The photographs, memorabilia and names closed the gap of 4 decades + and stirred up interesting memories.
Peter Harrison   1953 -6G C   Melbourne Australia
I consider myself to be very lucky to have been a pupil at LEGS from 1948 to 1953. The quality of overall education under the control of "Drac" was excellent. My forte was sport particularly cricket, knocking 100 and taking 6 for 34 in the annual School versus Old Boys game of 1953, and also football representing Derbyshire Grammar Schools versus Yorkshire G Schools (we won 3-2 at Chesterfield) With Harold Morton, who unfortunately passed away last year,we had a Sports Master who was a first class tutor not only of skills but also drilled in to us the ethic of true sportsmanship which has been with me throughout my life. Other masters persevered and gave me sufficient academic knowledge to proceed via Derby Tech, Notts Univ., and Leeds, to have a career in Textile Science and Management. I worked in England, at Spondon, then on to New Zealand before emigrating with my wife and son to Australia in 1965. We have lived in Melbourne since then apart from a pre retirement 3 year contract living and working in Thailand. I have been retired for over 10 years and find time to travel widely, enjoy with my now extended family and get in more than a few games of golf regularly. Our regular visits to "home" always included a trip passed the old school for nostalgic reasons, a visit to a Rams game, if in season, and to call in at Travellers Rest, Draycott, for a pint or two of Pedigree, although my tipple nowadays is an Aussie plonk usually Red. !!!!

After leaving school I did an Engineering degree at Warwick before joining a construction company in Derby. After 4 years I decided to do a Masters Degree in Construction management at Loughborough. On graduation I got a job with my current employer and 26 years later here I am . One of the less memorable members of 4WB/5B - transferees from Wilsthorpe SM. Graduated from Liverpool in Maths and Computer Science in 1971. Married Helena (Italian grad from Liverpool) in 1972. Various jobs including teaching, but settled on a career in tax which I have pursued since 1975. Now run the tax dept for what is left of Littlewoods Ltd. 2 sons, Richard (29) who is a tax manager in KPMG, and Stephen (25), a tax cosultant in PWC. Either we are a very boring family, or just victims of genetics. I was the rogue Liverpool FC supporter amongst my friends at LEGS, although I am considered as slightly more normal now that I live in Merseyside. Hobbies include photography, wine, music and travel, and now that Helena has retired from teaching we hope to combine the interests in wine and travel to visit lots of places we haven't had the time to see before. I see Zedge Budzik regularly, but don't really stay in touch with anyone else from LEGS, although I often wonder how they are doing." Other 4WB/5B classmates include Steve Burton, Brian Boswell, John Broadbent (who sadly died whilst at LEGS), Steven Wrigley, Roger Clarke, Mick Brown, Trevor Gingel (probably spelt that incorrectly), Richard Tivey, John Temple, Ian Dover, Michael Jarvis, Robert Toulson, and of course Zedge. There were more but I can't remember all the names off the top of my head.

Tom Cooper   1935 -6th A 01623 554402 42 Howard Street, Sutton in Ashfield. The information you gave to me enabled me to visit Steve Lindahl at his Home. He his far from well and I stayed reminiscing for an hour. A very much changed Steve.. We. were both 17 or 18 years old , and now close to 88, so its only to be expected but after a very few words I was seeing him as as I used to...he was struggling a bit because he kept saying I looked so young..but my Pal is far from well and I shall hope to see him in the not too far distant future. Time went too fast but the effort was most rewarding. He has his son Peter living with him and he was very helpful. Thanks a million John.
