Says Phil Payne: 'I think the diver might be me.' This was the 'style' competition. That's why there's only one competitor. Dive and swim to the mid-point, then swim back in the style of your choice. There was one event for each swimming style - I distinctly remember entering the breaststroke and coming either last or second last. Twaddle and I were standing side by side at that time and I remember giving him my camera while I competed.
There was a girls style competition going on the other side of the pool - that's what they're all looking at. I think the boys' style judge might have been Hopkin, walking along the side the picture was taken from.
